River Thames Infrastructure

Commissioned by Open City, River Thames Infrastructure is an illustrated map and self-guided tour by Madeleine Kessler and Paul Lincoln exploring the River Thames through the infrastructure built along its banks and beneath its waters.

Designed to be experienced on foot and by river, the route connects landmarks including Bazalgette's Victoria Embankment, the Brunel Thames Tunnel, the Thames Barrier and the Thames Tideway Tunnel, revealing how successive generations of architects, engineers and landscape architects have transformed London's relationship with water. The guide invites readers to see the Thames as more than a river, exploring how its infrastructure has enabled London's growth, improved public health and transformed the public realm, and how today's investment in water infrastructure is once again remaking the city.
